Brandi Chastain

1968 –

“Momentary insanity, nothing more, nothing less. I wasn’t thinking about anything. I thought, 'This is the greatest moment of my life on the soccer field.”

We Saw Her Bra

Women’s soccer was not followed broadly in the U.S. in the 1990’s. That changed with Brandi Chastain. Chastain, came to recognition as a key member of the U.S. Women’s Soccer World Cup team in 1999, and helped win the Gold for the U.S. team. Her game winning goal, in a penalty kick, against China, led to the victory.

In her exuberance, she took off her jersey, revealing her bra. This led to her photo on the covers of TIME, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. Additionally, she increased her notoriety by famously photographed naked on the cover of Gear magazine.

Overwhelmed by all the attention garnered by her braless moment, she said, “there was certainly no way I could have prepared for it. It was instantaneous. It’s so amazing how the media can change everybody’s perception of you so quickly, literally overnight… But really, most significantly, the publicity has given me a chance to talk about soccer with more people more than ever, and that is what’s most important to me. That’s what I like best.”

Always an athlete — in elementary school, she played pee-wee football and Little League – Chastain actively continues to compete until this day.
